You are the folks I was looking for a few days ago when I asked the American Library Association if they would make a public statement condemning the attempt of the Alaska governor to intimidate the Wasilla, AK city librarian a few years ago.
The ALA refused to do so. So much for their touting of free speech/reading and their anti-censorship stance. If you talk the talk, you should be prepared to walk the walk. They were not.
Hi,
I just posted several links in response to the Frontiersman article reprint and did not catch a typo in one of the descriptive headings:
“CNN Reports McCain/Pail Fire Back…Book Ban Rumor”
Please correct “Palin” if possible.
Thank you,
Gwen
Why dont you knotheads go find something constructive to do? Librarians against Palin? Go somewhere and find a life. You have nothing better to do? As though she is a book burning neo-nazi or something. How repugnant can any one American be. You need to be ashamed of your selves. I bet you all think abortion is ok too, and not murder? Although the killing of another human in every state is illegal. Two women bumpin fuzz is ok by you too I bet?
And yes, be sure that cnn is your primary source. Those people need to be chained and sent into the sea. This country is so F***ed up due to liberal idiots like librarians against…Thank God the end is near. Enjoy the 7 year tribulation you Godless dimwits.
I am so glad I found this site! I too had been wondering what books Palin tried to have banned. What really matters is that she tried at all to do such a thing. She and others like her who would seek to impose their beliefs on everyone else, are truly scary and a threat to democracy and freedom!

Anne Kilkenny has updated her original e-mail about Sarah Palin. This appeared in sfgate.com, the online version of the SF Chronicle newspaper:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/09/09/ED7R12QR4F.DTL
Dear Readers,
As I write, it has been more than a week since the e-mail I wrote to friends and family about Sarah Palin began to ping-pong around the country. In that time, I’ve received over 9,600 e-mails. I’ve lost track of the number of journalists – maybe 3 dozen? – who have challenged me to provide sources to substantiate all that I mentioned in it. I have cooperated fully with everyone, providing all the information anyone has requested, and offering all the help I could.
It is a strange thing to have your words echo back to you from around the world. If I were to write my original e-mail today, I would make the following changes:
1) If I could change one word, it would be the word “hate.” I said Sarah Palin hated me. That was inappropriate. I should have said that Sarah knows that she lost my support when she sought to remove books that she didn’t like from the library.
………………..
2) I wrote: “While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed.”
I should NOT have written “…because the librarian refused …”. I should have written ” … after the Librarian refused…”
3) I would add that I have no recollection of what specific book titles Mayor Palin wanted removed from the library, or if she even named any. There is a list of books out there; I know nothing about that list! It looks bogus
The Washington Post, the New York Daily News, as well as yours truly have been investigating a serious allegation for the last two weeks. Rather than going into detail here, better if you just read the article. I hate censorship, too.

The NY Times published a lengthy article about Palin today, “Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes” that provides more details about Palin & book banning:
———————-
“But in 1995, Ms. Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues that she had noticed the book “Daddy’s Roommate” on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase and Mr. Stein. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it.
“Sarah said she didn’t need to read that stuff,” Ms. Chase said. “It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn’t even read it.”
“I’m still proud of Sarah,” she added, “but she scares the bejeebers out of me.”

Have you, by chance, seen the Point campaign that aims to crowd-source swing-state ads against Palin?
It seems like it would be a nice fit:

where’s the bumper sticker? there was a librariansagainstbush.org during his campaigns.
thanks for the site!
It is really disgusting to spread complete lies like you bunch of creeps do. And isn’t it interesting when of course it is you disgusting people who decide what books are allowed in libraries. Of course that is what you think you are allowed to do. Librarians censor more books in this country than anyone in existence. It would be really nice to see lists of books that you have decided don’t belong in libraries. Like anything you decide you don’t like. And don’t even try to tell me you would never do that. Because interesting enough I have tried to find certain non liberal books in libraries that just don’t seem to be in any library I try. You are communists. You are not in charge of what people should see and have. It is up to us. You are paid to work for the people you are not in charge of them. That is the problem with liberals. And the public libraries have been completely hijacked by people like you. And why you are at it honest people care about the truth. You think you are in charge of telling people what they can believe is the truth.
Pam, I got the lovely Librarians Against Palin bumper sticker from CafePress.

PBS has a poll asking if the voter believes Palin is qualified to be president. There is a right-wing email effort to change the expected results. Please vote and forward. So far the Yes vote is winning. Thanks!

Seems like a small thing one could do if you don’t think Palin is a good choice for VP.
Pinnell-Stephens states that she does not think the vp nominee is up for the job. …”she has no understanding at all the role of libraries in a democracy.” HUH.
We live in a constitutional federal republic, not a democracy.
Anytime a librarian does not select a book they are censoring. A lot of library directors work at the discretion of the mayor or city manager. That is life. If Sarah was a democrat you would not have this dicsussion.
From Tuesday’s Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman, an exclusive interview with Palin. Item 7 deals with the library issue. Sort of. At least she didn’t deny talking with the librarian about what books were in question, the way she denied talking to the chief of police about rape kits.

7. Reporters from around the globe have been investigating policies and decisions you made during your time as Wasilla mayor. Regarding the flap over questioning then library director Mary Ellen Emmons, at the time in December 1996 you said inquiries you made to her about censoring materials in the library were “rhetorical.” Please explain. Were there books at the library at that time you wanted removed? Was there ever a list of books you didn’t want at the Wasilla library? Also, a San Francisco man recently donated two books to the Wasilla library that attempt to explain homosexual family life to children. Do you see any reason these books should not be placed on the library’s shelves?
As people there know, all questions posed to the library director were asked in a context of professionalism, regarding the library policy that was in place. Before I became mayor, there was conversation in our community about what sorts of books were appropriate for the public library. I asked the librarian about the process for answering that question as a way to familiarize myself with city staff and the issues being discussed in Wasilla at that time. I certainly never advocated banning books. This was a ridiculous, false claim. Supposedly one of the books the media claims I banned was “Harry Potter,” which wasn’t even published back then. There were never any books banned and any reports claiming otherwise are grossly false.
Thank you so much for this great website! I’m doing a school project against library censorship and I think I’m going to make it a documentary. I definitley know that at least one section is going to be about Palin and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!
